ABOUT OUR CLUB

Welcome to Highton Rotary, we are an active and enthusiastic Club that supports our local community, our Rotary District 9780, and the international community through Rotary International.

Chartered in December 1975, sponsored by The Rotary Club of Belmont, we have been working to improve lives in our community and globally for almost 50 years.

We undertake projects in all Rotary Avenues of Service - Community Service, International Service, Vocational Service, Youth Service, Environmental Projection and Support joining with 1.4 million Rotary volunteers in 34,000 Rotary Clubs around the world.

We have built houses to raise funds for projects, travelled overseas to support local communities in need - sometimes helping to build schools, or community centres, taken learning tools and menstrual support to schools in Cambodia, run iconic events like The Barwon Banks Fun Run and Starsearch, built Rotunda's to give shade and shelter for our local community around the Barwon River Precincts.  We had a long association with the Lorne Pier to Pub, and for many years managed Registration and then worked on the beach as the swimmers came ashore.  Many proud and fun memories of this project as we now have retired from our roles with the Pier to Pub team.

More recently, we have embraced a strong and effective Program of Environmental Projects including Blister Pack Recycling, running a series of seminars and activities (including plant based cooking) on environmentally supportive activites like composting, recycling and more.  We lead a Lids Recycling Project in conjunction with Geelong Tech, and most recently we are leading a joint Rotary Club Program of Creating Nature Strip Gardens to promote pollinator pathways.  We strongly support Bees and raise awareness of the importance of a healthy Bee population to pollinate our fruits and vegetables.  We have a dedicated Environment Page if you would like more details on our environment support. https://hightonrotary.com/sitepage/supporting-our-environment/

Since November 2022 we have been operating Heritage Tours of the Fyansford Paper Mill Precincts, showcasing this beautiful hidden area that has some very surprising war time history and history behind every wall.  You can learn more about these tours on our specific web page and also on Facebook. https://hightonrotary.com/page/...

We also have a strong focus on raising awareness of domestic and family violence, and support the Say No2 Family and Domestic Violence campaigns.  We have provided funding for support programs for women and children living in domestic violence situations, and join with other Clubs in the Geelong area in continuing to raise awareness of this issue and also to support campaigns to prevent elder abuse.

Rotary has been working with partners The Gates Foundation, World Health Organisation and others to eradicate polio since 1985.  This Rotary International initiative was started by then Rotary International President Sir Clem Renouf (an Australian) and will continue until polio no longer exists.  We are so close to reaching this point and it remains a strong focus of Rotarians across the world.

We welcome new volunteers to join with us, and if you would like to learn more about the work we do, or join us at hear a wonderful speaker at one of our meetings, please email us on hightonrotary@gmail.com
