From President David

This is David's note from 2 weeks ago - the one I missed !!!!

Another interesting night was had Thursday in that it we had an opportunity to examine Barwarre Gardens and the Lifestyle associated with this type of living, this provides “food for thought” into the future of us all, so we can provide the best opportunities for us and our family’s. I particularly like the – “think 10 years in front of us”

This week was also a sad one for the club in the funeral for John Bennett this week, which was very well attended. The achievements for John and his Rotary life should not be underestimated. Whilst sad we acknowledge and celebrate the life of John and wish Sandra and family the very best in the coming weeks.

2 weeks to go for myself and the current board, now is the time for planning and looking forward to the new Rotary year. This Thursday we have the opportunity to examine one of the potential new venues and also consider the new committees for next year. Always remember we do not have to support old programs and we should also consider proposals on their merits.  Fresh ideas can make us grow and give us opportunities to enrich new life’s so don’t be restricted to the old ways. Rotary and our club need to evolve with community needs to be as successful as it can be. Please be mindful of this as we head into the new year.

Looking forward to a great meeting this week

Continue to be a “gift to the world”

From the Editor
First a confession.
When we were at Barwarre Gardens, Mark Seller said to me that he must have missed the bulletin that week. Aaaaaaagh - what with trying to deal with the Blue Book, the Annual Report and a few other things at work I completely forgot about it. Ooops.
Anyway, the Blue Book's done and the Annual Report nearly finished - which is just as well seeing that we have to get it printed ready for distribution on Thursday Night.
Hope you didn't forget that Thursday's the Changeover Dinner.

And that means this is the last Bulletin you'll be seeing from me - Pauline's taking over from here so expect something quite different - and it's about time for a change.

I can remember when Peter Mansfield first asked me to do the bulletin. I was completely out of my depth but with a bit of coaching from Peter, a lot of research into what other Rotary Clubs did and a quick look through what my Dad used to do for the works magazine he edited back in the 1950's, we soon came to an agreement as to what was needed - and away we went. I quickly learned that for a new Rotarian, Bulletin Editor is probably one of the best ways of keeping in touch with what the Club's doing as a whole. In fact I'm going to miss having items fed to me - I'll have to keep up-to-date by visiting our web page, Facebook and all those other Social Media things.

Thanks for your support and kind words over how ever many years it has been - I've lost count - it's been mostly fun and I've enjoyed the challenge. Best wishes to Pauline as she takes over the reins and I'm looking forward to reading the bulletin instead of writing it !!!!

Cheers
Paul

Polio this week

Polio this week as of  21 June 2016
  • The knowledge, skills and infrastructure built to end polio are helping to make dramatic progress on improving children’s health more broadly. In this factsheet discover how the eradication infrastructure is expanding the reach of health services, improving disease surveillance and building health worker capacity. By planning now, we can keep the world polio-free and ensure that the investments made in ending polio have a broad and lasting impact on children’s health and development, long after polio is gone.

ROTARY PEACE FELLOWS WIN COMPETITION TO SPREAD PEACE

Twelve Rotary Peace Fellows are about to get even more guidance in their area of focus. They are not just peace fellowsbut also a select group of Global Peace Index Ambassadors who were recognized for their innovative ideas on working with Rotary clubs in spreading the messages of peace.

Through the program, a collaboration between Rotary and the Institute for Economics and Peace, over 100 former and current peace fellows spent two months receiving training on the methodology the institute uses to create theGlobal Peace Index, the world’s leading tool for quantifying peace. Ambassadors learned about research behind thePositive Peace and Rotary’s increasing involvement in peace and conflict prevention and resolution.

For the "10 for the 10th" competition, which celebrated the tenth annual release of the index, ambassadors submitted creative ideas for communicating the findings of the report and working with clubs around the globe. The winners will be trained to give Global Peace Index presentations in 10 cities around the world and will receive up to $1,000 to conduct the events.

The institute announced the winners at the Future of Peace Summit on 15 June in Washington, D.C. The 10 winning proposals were submitted by 12 current and former peace fellows:

  • Maria Aseneta (Chulalongkorn University, January 2015)
  • Eduardo da Costa (Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2010-12)
  • Phil Gittins (Chulalongkorn University, June 2012)
  • Umar Hayat (Chulalongkorn University, June 2015)
  • Manisha Javeri (Chulalongkorn University, June 2010)
  • Sellah King’oro (Chulalongkorn University, January 2016)
  • Summer Lewis (University of Queensland, 2010-12) and Jorge Meruvia (International Christian University, 2008-10)
  • Philip Mwesigwa (International Christian University, 2007-09)
  • Ian Saini (Chulalongkorn University, January 2014)
  • Sarah Sanderson and Joshua Campbell (International Christian University, 2015-17)

Rotary General Secretary John Hewko spoke at a peace summit on 15 June in Washington D.C., calling Rotary’s collaboration with the institute “very promising.” The two organizations have begun a peacebuilding project in Uganda, Hewko said. With a Rotary global grant, Rotary members will use the institute’s findings to educate 100 Rotaractors on how they can become pillars of peace.

Friendship is one of the top reasons members join and stay in Rotary. To boost these ties, Rotary Fellowships offer members, spouses, and Rotaractors the chance to connect with one another while enjoying their favorite recreational or professional pursuits. Over 60 Rotary Fellowships cover interests from tennis to wine, marathon running to cooking, scuba diving to recreational vehicles, jazz to computers, and more.
Rotary Fellowships arrange regional and international events, contests, and meetings where members bond and build lasting friendships outside their clubs, districts, and even countries. June is Rotary Fellowships Month, so make sure to read our Rotary Service Connections blog to learn how several fellowships combine fun and friendship with service. By connecting Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni with shared interests, the fellowships extend the Rotary experience beyond local communities.

Humour ?

Humour ?

This happened to an Englishman in France who was totally drunk.

The French Policeman stops his car and asks the gentleman if he has been drinking.
With great difficulty, the Englishman admits that he has been drinking all day, that his Daughter got married in the morning to a French man, and that he drank champagne and a few bottles of wine at the reception and a quite few glasses of single malt thereafter.
Quite upset, the Policeman proceeds to Alco test (breath test) him and asks the Englishman if he knows under French Law why he has just been arrested.
The Englishman answers With humour:  No! Do you know that this is a British car and that my wife is the driver...on the other side?

The new boat rental employee looked out at the lake. It was getting late and fog was starting to come in. He could just faintly make out one small rowboat, its number painted on the hull, still way out on the lake, and he had already used his bullhorn 30 minutes ago to tell all the rentals it was time to return to shore. He used his bullhorn again. "Boat #99, time to come in! Boat #99, please return to shore!" Nothing.
Another employee came up. "We don't have a boat #99."
The other employee looked again, then raised his bullhorn. "Boat #66 - are you in trouble?"

I was working out at the gym when I spotted a sweet young thing walking in ....
I asked the trainer standing next to me, "What machine should I use to impress that lady over there?"
The trainer looked me over and said; "I would recommend the ATM in the lobby."
