Our meeting this week was certainly different, with most members walking out just before the guest speaker was to start!!! The issue was car parking, and security at Deakin had just warned us that fines would be issued to cars parked in the area many members (and our guest speaker) had parked! The usual car park was closed when we arrived at Deakin. Fortunately they all returned a short time later.

We then had a terrific presentation from Sarah Spiker, about the  Cotton On Foundation. Sarah spoke of the innovative way the Foundation raises funds, through the sales of bottled water, mints and cloth shopping bags in their stores. The work their Foundation is doing focuses on education in South Uganda, and they are making a difference!

Within the club there is much planning underway for our Open Garden Day. A lot of Risk Assessment and Management, Business planning, and PR has been done. Please keep telling your work colleagues, friends and family about the event. We do need considerable manpower on the day, and rosters and requests for catering are now being circulated.

The club Board is well aware that communication within the club is very important. With the change of format of committee meeting nights, reports from Directors to the club are not given on these nights (as they were at times in the past). It was discussed at the recent Board meeting, and agreed that at dinner meetings we will have one or two Directors give a report, with updates in the Bulletin. Colin started this week. We also had many announcements at the meeting  – communicating what’s  happening in the club.

If you are interested in what the Board is working on, you can log in to the members area on our website, and under club documents you will find the minutes from Board meetings. You are welcome to read and feedback comments. Or you can simply ask a Board member!

Next week we have  Corio Bay and Geelong West Rotary clubs coming to our meeting, as a combined meeting night. Our guest speaker is Brett Luxford from CoGG,  speaking on the Central Geelong Revitalisation Plan. As always, you are welcome to bring any family and friends who may be interested.

See you there

Announcements

  • From Stephen: Star Search meeting at Stephen's home on Monday October 31,   If you are on the Star Search Committee please let Stephen know if you can attend.  Stephen also asked members to let him know if there are any specific PR materials you would like to have displayed at our Open Gardens Day on November 27
  • From Pauline:  Many thanks to the Club members who have accepted nominations for next years Board.  All positions now have a nominated Director/Secretary/Treasurer, except for President Elect.  Pauline attended President Elect Training last Sunday in Ballarat, meeting with DGE Ray Herbert and 27 of the 47 Presidents Elect from around the District.  12 Clubs have yet to nominate a PE for next year.  Some Clubs are sharing the role with 2 or 4 Past Presidents taking responsibility for a 3 month or 6 month period.  Some PE's are taking the role for a 2nd or even 4th time, as it gets more difficult to find a PE who has not already been President.
  • From Ian :  Ice Fight Update  The work continues on the Staughton Vale School Camp project.  70 members from the Deakin Business & Community Links Program have volunteered to assist.  On December 7, 35 of those volunteers will be working at Staughton Vale, while the remaining volunteers will help with other Northern Bay College campus projects.  Many thanks to Robert J and Barry S for providing new steps at Staughton Vale.
  • From Jim:  Volunteers are needed for the November 7 Christchurch Meals Program, and then on December 7 it is our annual Christchurch Christmas Dinner.  Please let Jim know if you are available to assist on November 7.
  • From Pam:  A reminder that payment for our dinner at the Golden Dragon on November 10, needs to be received by next weeks meeting at the latest to secure your booking.  Pam has a football that will be raffled at next weeks meeting.  Please make sure that you have our Club Christmas Dinner date in your diary - December 15.  Please contact Bruce  or Merridee for further information.
  • From David:  An update on the Open Gardens Day.  More information later in the Bulletin
  • From Paul:  The Club's Policy Document on Child Safe Standards is now complete and has been approved and accepted by the Board.  Members have received an electronic copy, Paul also has a number of printed copies if you would prefer.  It is a requirement that each member read and accept this policy and then sign the page relating to Child Standard 3 - Rotary Club of Highton - Code of Conduct.  This signed page should be returned to Darcy for safe keeping.  Those members at our meeting this week received a printed copy and have signed it.  If you were not at the meeting please read the copy provided by Paul, print the page relating to Child Safe Standard 3, sign, have it witnessed and return it to Darcy.  This policy document will be reviewed annually, at the Annual General Meeting in November. The first review will be in 2017.

Opens Gardens Day

David S gave a run down on how the Open Gardens Day Planning is coming along.  Ros provided every member with a "package" of information including 3 copies of the Open Gardens Day Flyer, and also a invitation to members to assist with various tasks. If you were not at the meeting, an envelope will be waiting for you next week.  A complete Volunteer Schedule for both catering (Barb) and garden entry/setup/signage etc. (David) will be circulated to all members shortly.  Please be prepared to assist on the day to make this inaugural Open Gardens Day a huge success.  We are putting the word out via our FB page using the images below.  The first one is our first FB Post, and the second one is our new FB banner.  Stephen has placed our event onto many community and event publications both online and in print, produced flyers, and the PR Committee are working hard to make sure that the news about  Highton Rotary Open Gardens Day is shared to as many people as possible.

Can you help out on Gala Day for Barwon Health

This year Barwon Health Foundation’s Gala Day will celebrate its 100th year on Saturday 12 November 2016! Gala Day is all about celebrating our community and is an opportunity for Barwon Health to provide the community with a family fun day out! The festivities will begin in Malop Street with entertainment and activities from 2pm – 7pm, followed by a colourful and festive twilight parade through central Geelong from 7.30pm finishing at the iconic Geelong Christmas Tree.

To make Gala Day a successful and safe event for the community, we (Barwon Health) need help with the following activities on the day;

Parade Marshal: Assist with directing pedestrians along the parade route, ensuring the safety of both patrons and parade entrants from 6:45pm - 9pm.

Parade Participant: Sell pinwheels to the crowd while walking in the parade from 6.45pm – 9pm.

Merchandise Seller: Sell Barwon Health Foundation merchandise on the parade route from 6pm – 9pm.

Get involved and come and join the fun of volunteering on Gala Day, it’s a great way to enjoy the festivities up close. It’s quick and easy to sign up, just email the attached registration form to jlamme@barwonhealth.org.au
