from president david

Thanks must go to Anne Mulcahy for her fascinating message on how our mind works. It’s interesting that we seem to spend more time understanding how the washing machine works, rather than the mind. As always the amount of talent within our club should never be under estimated. Thanks Anne for a really fascinating night.

This week of course we have conference over the weekend and I look forward to catching up with all things Rotary. If unable to make it I think the MND walk on Sunday is a very worthy activity and in the spirit of our club, particularly to Darcy and Meg https://www.mycause.com.au/events/walktodfeetmnd

Please be mindful of our next Lyndon Grove meal will be a breakfast on March the 24th (prior to Easter) with a guest speaker so please make every effort.

Always remember we are a “gift to the world”

That was the week that was.

President David started off by welcoming Janice and Anne and reminded us that there isn't a Dinner meeting next week (17th) and a breakfast meeting the week after (24th).

In announcements :

Barb let us know that there are 2 Gordon Students who will receive scholarships from our club. Indiana Paisley and Shae Kennedy are both completing year 12 studies at the Gordon and hope to continue their studies at University.

Ken Mansfield told us that the International Committee has donated $500 to the Fiji Cyclone Appeal. Also about 80 computers donated by Oberon High are on their way to DIK to be checked over by Eeon before finding their way to deserving causes overseas.

Rod reminded us that the RIDE THE BELLARINE event is fast approaching and volunteers are needed for marshalling duties.

Malcolm advised that Guess Who's Coming To Dinner is on again this year - on Saturday 16th April. Contact Malcolm if you didn't fill in a form.

Stephen Bath showed us some A3 advertising stands which are being purchased with the District PR Grant. See Stephen if you think up somewhere they can be used. He also confirmed that the Star Search Final will be held on Friday June 3rd - keep the date free we'll need volunteers.

Darcy encouraged those who aren't attending the Conference to participate in a Walk starting at the Barwon Valley Park in aid of MND. It starts at 10.30am and registration is $30. See Darcy for more details.

Colin wants us to buy more entertainment books this year so be prepared.

Ian confirmed that he attended the AGM of the Waurn Ponds Deakin Probus Club - they now have 100 members and a waiting list and Ned Amezdroz is the President this year.

The fines session run by Graham Blood was both educational and amusing - not sure how much money was raised however !!!!

Anne Mulcahy rounded off the evening with "Making the Message Stick" which was an exposee of how people learn and the techniques we can use to get the message across and understood.

The next couple of weeks are peculiar !!

For those who don't read "The Next 4 weeks" in this bulletin and either haven't listened to announcements or haven't been at meetings, please note :

There's no meeting at Lyndon Grove this week.

This is to encourage you to attend the District Conference.

However if you're not going to the Conference, you should consider participating in supporting Darcy in the walk for MND which will be held on Sunday at the Barwon Valley Park. Phone Darcy for the details.

And the meeting next week will be a Breakfast meeting - recognising that some of us will want to get away quickly to prepare for the Easter break.

Successful women mentor youth through Rotary

Clara Montanez attends a reception in 2013 for the Champions of Change honorees at the White House in Washington D.C.

When Clara Montanez was a student, she never heard the word mentoring. The idea of having a role model help you pursue your ambitions was unfamiliar to her.

"You basically chose your career based on personal interest and hoped you could find a job," says Montanez, senior director of investment for Oppenheimer & Co., Inc. "I went the route of getting married and having children first, and started my career later in life. I had no model for how to do that."

That changed for Montanez the day a friend invited her to join Rotary.

"Frankly, I was dragged into Rotary. I didn't see a connection at first," says Montanez, who's been a member of the Rotary Club of Washington, D.C., since 2003. "But then I met several women, including Doris Margolis, who took me under her wing and started mentoring me on how to get more involved. I began seeing the value in having someone I could count on as a mentor, and I have become more of a leader in our club, in my community, and at work."

Rotary's mentoring opportunities motivated Montanez, Rotary's alternate representative to the Organization of American States, to help organize an event for International Women's Day, 8 March. The event, to be held at the World Bank Group headquarters in Washington, will feature Deepa Willingham and Marion Bunch, both previously honored as Rotary Women of Action. Rotary International Director Jennifer Jones will moderate the event, which will be streamed on World Bank Live.

Montanez says Rotary has given her a platform to mentor young women as they balance career and family, as well as manage the challenge of repaying student loans. According to a recent study by the American Association of University Women, the student loan debt burden weighs more heavily on women because of the persistent gap in pay between women and men.

"I think Rotary has given me access to young people, like Rotaractors, and they are ready to accept guidance because Rotary is a safe place to reach out and get advice," says Montanez.

Similarly, Jackie Huie, a member of the Rotary Club of St. Joseph & Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA, recognizes Rotary's mentoring power. In 2007, Huie's club created a program that matches high school juniors and seniors with a mentor in the field they'd like to enter. The program started with 40 students at one high school and has now expanded into schools across the area.

"I got a letter from a girl who came from a poor background, and through the program, she got a chance to meet with an attorney in town," says Huie, president of JohnsonRauhoff, a multimedia company that fosters creative thinking for artists. "It inspired her and gave her confidence to go to school and study law. She got accepted into four law schools and is on her way to becoming an attorney."

Besides the investment in young people's futures, mentoring brings clubs important community recognition. For example, Huie's club has 150 members, a large number for a club that doesn't hold membership drives, she says.

"Everyone in southwest Michigan knows about Rotary," says Huie. "We had a student who wanted to be a CEO for a large corporation. After we arranged for him to meet with the CEO of Whirlpool, his father was so impressed with the whole program that he joined Rotary."

Many of the program's early participants went on to form an Interact club, and there are now more than 200 Interact members at four area schools. Forty of them will travel to the Dominican Republic this summer to install water filters and take part in a medical mission.

"It's important for Rotary to make an investment in young people," says Huie. "My own daughter is in Interact because of my membership in Rotary. I think her world is broader, and she looks at the world differently. We all do, because of what we've learned through Rotary."

Collection of Toiletries and Hearing Aids at Conference

There will be several collection boxes in the “Rotary on Show” (previously called House of Friendship) displays at Conference.

  •          The Alfredton RC collect toiletries which are sent to various countries and have also recently been distributed to the Scotsburn area after the bushfire there.
They have received donation of items from members, friends, relatives, work colleagues and other Rotarians who have collected them from hotel rooms on their travels.

There will be a collection box at Conference, so bring your spare toiletries with you or send them with whoever is going from your club.

  •          Assistant Governor Graeme Fischer form the Camperdown RC has been collecting hearing aids for similar purposes for recycling for those who cannot afford them.  This is in conjunction with a program run by one of the Melbourne based Rotary Clubs.  So if you have any discarded hearing aids please bring them along to contribute to the collection

Barwon Valley School in Belmont are looking for volunteers for our swimming program in Term 2. Volunteers are welcome on one or all both days.

A few years ago, I was a volunteer at Barwon Valley School and received an award from the Highton Rotary Club and was able to donate towards the swimming pool resources. It would be great to have your support with our swimming program. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Operator: 'I think it means the telephone plug on the wall.'

I woke to go to the toilet in the middle of the night and noticed a burglar sneaking through next door's garden.
Suddenly my neighbour came from nowhere and smacked him over the head with a shovel killing him instantly.
He then began to dig a grave with the shovel.
Astonished, I got back into bed.
My wife said "Darling, you're shaking, what is it?"
"You'll never believe what I've just seen!" I said, "That bloke next door has still got my shovel."
