Thanks for all for putting into a club night and demonstrating some of the core values of rotary. I had an opportunity (with our guest) to look at some of the committee’s at work and its fabulous to see the work at hand.  Our guest for the night was impressed by the breath of activities we pursue, sometime we forget how much we actually achieve.

As I mentioned on the night please consider the Rotary conference on the weekend of March the 19th and the club will do everything to support that.  I appreciate the hours that can be required to be an active Rotarian and I thank you for all your efforts.

This week we have Mike McKinstry, CEO of Karingal and we look forward to his visit as we continue to support this worthwhile organisation.

Thanks to all and continue to be a “gift to the world”

David Farnsworth

Editor's Comments/Qustions
This is the second week I've put a link in the "funnies" to a You-tube cartoon.
I've just realised that they're very pertinent to a couple of comments/questions which I have about the bulletin.
We've moved from paper to electronic distribution.
Is it now time for an even greater leap ?
Did you read last week's article about the role of facebook in Rotary - or are you one who ignores that stuff and goes straight to the what's on this week and the funnies.
My question has to do with how relevant the bulletin is with facebook, twitter and other social media now in such common use.
However, if I don't produce a bulletin, would you take the time to go and find Rotary articles for yourself ?
Do we really need a list of birthdays and anniversaries ? If we do then it could be handled through facebook just as easily.
Or don't you like facebook ?
It would be really useful if people would let me know their thoughts - whether continuing with a bulletin is the right thing to do, and if so what it should contain. If it isn't necessary then do we need to increase our use of facebook and twitter (or their equivalents).
Why not go electronic and email me your comments -beekon@datafast.net.au is my address.
Cheers
Paul

Polio this week

Polio this week as of 10 February 2016

  • As we enter February 2016, GPEI bids farewell to Hamid Jafari, the former director of GPEI, whose tenure has seen the removal of Nigeria from the list of polio-endemic countries, certification of the eradication of wild poliovirus type 2, and the lowest number of cases reported in the fewest number of places in any one year. GPEI welcomes Michel Zaffran, former coordinator of the WHO Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), as its new director, as we enter a pivotal part of the Endgame Plan.

  • Iraq has introduced the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) into its routine immunization system.

  • Environmental surveillance is playing an increasingly important role in ensuring that the poliovirus is found, wherever it continues to circulate.

  • There are nine weeks to go until the globally synchronized switch from the trivalent to bivalent oral polio vaccine, an important milestone in achieving a polio-free world.
  •

Warracknabeal President Awarded Young Citizen of the Year
Elise Morrison, president of the newly reformed Rotaract Club of Warracknabeal was honoured with a Young Citizen of the Year award in recent Australia Day celebrations by the Yarriambiack Shire Council. Elise was recognised alongside Aiden Ciemcioch for their work towards getting youth involved in the community, through events like “Yarriambiack Has Talent” and gaming nights. Elise and Aiden have also made a significant contribution by co-founding the Yarri Youth Council. Well done Elise!
Following the awards presentation the Warracknabeal Rotaract Club shared a wonderful Australia Day alongside the Rotary Club of Warracknabeal at the local Anzac Park. Rotaract members ran a popular thong throwing competition entered by participants of all ages and a ribbon making event which was a favourite with younger attendees.
Rotaract members and guests also had an absolute blast attending a recent social meeting held at Horsham Lanes and Games. A few games of bowling were followed by some fun at the house of bounce inflatable world. Great to see Warracknabeal members active and having a good time!

Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old woman:
"And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?" the reporter asked.
She simply replied, "No peer pressure."

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising.
I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors.
I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour.

But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

A prospective juror in a Dallas District Court was surprised by the definition of voluntary manslaughter given the panel: "An intentional killing that occurs while the defendant is under the immediate influence of sudden passion arising from an adequate cause, such as when a spouse's mate is found in a 'compromising position.'"
"See, I have a problem with that passion business," responded the jury candidate. "During my first marriage, I came in and found my husband in bed with my neighbor. All I did was divorce him. I had no idea that I could have shot him."
She wasn't selected for the jury.
