from president david

What a busy last night but terrific that we are able honour both Malcolm and Ian for services to Rotary. The achievements of both gentlemen should never be underestimated and the work they do for the community and indeed our club. It was lovely to see the support of both families to honour their achievement. I look forward to the future achievements of both gentlemen.

We also had the honour of our District Governor visitation and prior to the meeting she and the board had a discussion about our achievements and strengths. It is worth noting that as a club the challenges we face are similar to many clubs and where possible we need to bounce off other clubs ideas and thoughts, as they take on some of ours. Together I think we can come to the best outcome. The clubs support network needs to be used as much as appropriate. Thanks to Jane and Ross for their support of the club.

Thanks must also go to Stephen Bath and the Starsearch committee as we were able to secure a significant contribution, via the Bendigo Bank  as part of their Community Grants Program. This assistance gives the event a real boost and must be acknowledged. Annette Devery presented us with the cheque and we are grateful for the support of Bendigo bank.

Once again success of CQ must be acknowledged and thanks to Jim and the team. It is clear the program has been success on a number of levels and the positive feedback speaks well of the event and organization. We look forward to continuation of the event as this forms a positive part of our forward programs. As with many organizations we need be aware of the approval processes, and whilst this can be frustrating, we look forward to a positive outcome.

It was great to see 3 Rotaractors at the meeting last night and they were also able to interact with Jane and ourselves. Terrific to see the spirit of Rotary in our younger colleagues, we need to foster this relationship as helping young people achieve rotary goals is a real positive outcome and could provide candidates for our club.

Finally, what a delight, to announce the PE vacancy on the board has been filled by Barb. This should give our club a real boost and gives us a real positive way forward. I know Barb will have the full support of the club and could every member please consider how they might be able to assist with Barb in her year. It also paves the way forward for each of the committee’s to start to consider next year and smooth positive transition.

Yours in Rotary and always “be a gift to the world”

David started the meeting off welcoming 12 guests -
DG Jane Cox, AG Ross Taylor, Annette Devery from the Bendigo Bank, Yvonne Campbell, Alison John, Sarah and Richard, Jan Brewster,
Jamie, Liz and TJ from Rotaract Club of Barwon.
At that stage he didn't introduce Robert Doyle and Emma - 'cos that was a surprise !!!
PHF's were presented to Ian Campbell and Malcolm John - both were equally surprised. Ian because he thought it was a normal meeting, and Malcolm because he thought it was just a "fond farewell". The PHF's were handed over by DG Jane - very fitting.
Annette handed over a cheque from the Bendigo Bank in support of Star Search - much appreciated.
The came the announcements :
Ross recorded apologies from Graham Blood - on the Rhine, Doug Green - on the Gold Coast, Di Pearce - at Mt Hotham, Peter Hudson - in Leigh Creek. The only 2 with reasonable apologies were Bruce Nankervis - his brother John died - condolences to Bruce and family, and Brenton who was home looking after a sick Trish.
Colin - reminded us of the 1970's evening which will be the theme for our partners night - our meeting next week.
Barb - has sent out an appeal for marshalls for "Amy's Ride" on Sunday 13th September
Ian - has sent out an email telling us about "Mo-Off" - Bill Trengrove will shave off his "mo" to raise funds for the Royal Children's Hospital.
Jim - gave us the great news that we had a total of 2,474 attendees at Circus Quirkus - 1130 for the early performance and 1344 for the 5 o' clock. However our income this year will be less than $18,000 from the event when it's normally $30,000 or more. In some ways that's a disappointment, but if you take into account the looks on the childrens' faces, you'd do it even if we didn't make any money out of it!!!! The hardest task I had was keeping the "creeping towards the stage" at bay.
At the end, David Sinclair and Sarah won the raffle, and we were told that Barb Sheehan has accepted the position of President Elect. A fantastic end to a fantastic night !!

POLIO THIS WEEK

Polio this week as of 12 August 2015

  • 11 August marked one full year without a case of wild poliovirus confirmed on the African continent for the first time in history. Six weeks are required for all remaining samples in the laboratory to be processed and confirmed negative for poliovirus before there can be more confidence in a polio-free year in Africa. To end polio for good worldwide, there is much still to be done: surveillance needs to be strengthened so that we are sure no virus continues to circulate undetected; every last child needs to be reached with polio vaccines; momentum must be maintained in Africa, and transmission must be stopped in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • Last week the emergency committee of the International Health Regulations (IHR) met for the sixth time to assess whether the international spread of polio continues to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). Their findings and recommendations will be published in the coming week

rotary moment

Past RI President Frank Devlyn and his wife dance during last year's International Fellowship Dinner and Dance.Past RI President Frank Devlyn and his wife dance during the Fellowship Dinner and Dance at last year’s International Assembly.

By Past RI President Frank Devlyn

Like many Rotarians, I’ve often reflected on the moments that made me feel proud to be a Rotarian. Usually a highly successful project will come to mind, one that enabled us to help one or even thousands of people live better lives, all because of one special project. I’ve also experienced inspired moments while participating in Rotary projects.

However, I have something to confess: I joined Rotary to take advantage of the networking opportunities it offered me because I felt they would benefit my businesses. It’s no secret that Rotary opens doors and provides access to influential business and community leaders, because many of them are Rotarians themselves or they have great respect for everything related to Rotary.

Today, after 42 years of Rotary service, I still remember, like it was yesterday, the moment I accepted the invitation to become a member of the Rotary Club of Ciudad de México. It gave me access to the leaders not only of my community but also the communities I visited while launching my family business in Mexico and around the world.

I also remember the first of many moments when I felt tremendously proud to be a Rotarian. During my first year, I took on the task of representing the Mexican Optometric Association in an attempt to have it recognized by the most prestigious international organization in our profession.

The World Council of Optometry was meeting in Amsterdam in 1971. I met with the council’s board of directors and learned of the bureaucratic process I would need to follow. On the same day, I paid my first visit to the Rotary Club of Amsterdam. I was invited to sit at the special table for visitors and, to my great surprise, three of the persons seated there with me were on the council and happened to be visiting Rotarians.

Thanks to the magic of Rotary, when these Rotarians realized that I too was a Rotarian and that I had all the paperwork required to secure the accreditation of our Mexican association, the bureaucratic red tape suddenly disappeared. In the blink of an eye everything was approved — and that was the first time I felt tremendously proud to be a member of Rotary.

Adapted from a My Rotary Moment speech delivered at the 2013 International Assembly.

news from the district

Several concerned fellow Rotarians and friends have started a Rotarian Action Group for Endangered Species to mobilize Rotarians, Rotaractors and their families, to provide global awareness and focused ACTION in the continuing struggle to preserve and protect endangered species.

Our efforts will start with a particular focus on the rhinos, elephants and mountain gorillas in Africa, where poaching is a danger not only to these rare animals, but to the economic survival of the indigenous people who rely on eco-tourism for their livelihood.

I am very proud to formally notify you that Rtn. Ass. Prof. John Richmond of the Rotary Club of Ballarat West has been booked to travel with an Interplast program to Suva in November this year.

You will probably remember that the District raised over $50,000 in the two Rotary years 2012-13 and 2013-14, which entitled D9780 to nominate an observer on such a program. John will present a report on this trip when he returns, and will be an asset to our District committee.

Our committee has set out to raise such funds again over the two year period 2014-5 and 2015-6. Our major fund-raiser will be a raffle, which will be launched at the District Conference 2016, and drawn at the District Changeover, and which we hope to raise $9,000

Many thanks
John Oswald
Chairman Interplast Committee D9780 2015-6

Humour ?

The Salvation Army realized that it had never received a donation from Glasgow’s most successful professional gentleman.
So a volunteer paid him a visit in his lavish office.
The volunteer opened the meeting by saying, 'Our research shows that even though your annual income is over two million dollars, you don't give a penny to charity. Wouldn't you like to give something back to your community?.
The professional man thinks for a minute and says, 'First, did your research also show you that my mother is dying after a long painful illness, and she has huge medical bills that are far beyond her ability to pay?'
Embarrassed, the rep mumbles, 'Uh... No, I didn't know that.'
'Secondly,' says the professional man, 'did it show that my brother, a disabled Veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair and is unable to support his wife and six children?
The stricken rep begins to stammer an apology, but is cut off again
'Thirdly, did your research also show you that my sister's husband died in a dreadful car accident, leaving her penniless with a mortgage and three children, one of whom is disabled and another that has learning disabilities requiring an array of private tutors?'
The humiliated rep, completely beaten, says, 'I'm so sorry. I had no idea.
And the professional man says, 'So, if I didn't give any money to them, what makes you think I'd give any to you?

A young man was in love with two women and could not decide which of them to marry. Finally, he went to a marriage counselor. The counselor asked, "Please describe your two loves."
"Well, one is a great poet."
"And the other?"
"The other makes delicious pancakes."
"I see. So, you can't decide whether to marry for batter or for verse."

A woman goes into a sporting goods store to buy a rifle. "It's for my husband," she tells the clerk.
"Did he tell you what gauge to get?" asked the clerk.
"Are you kidding?" she says. "He doesn't even know that I'm going to shoot him!"
