from president david

A lovely night was had at the Yacht Club learning the importance of Bowel cancer awareness and looking after our bodies and indeed our minds (as with Di meeting) makes for an all round balance as we aid the community in a positive manner in many ways.

I had a Presidents' meeting on the Monday night and along with many fine programs in our local group Ian gave a great account of our club and other clubs in our ICE fight. Thanks to all who attended but I think the efforts of Barb, Ian and Ros are outstanding and shows our community standing in this regard.

Ride the Bellarine will return next year (April the 3rd) and Belmont rotary put forward a mentoring program that other clubs may be able to assist, mentoring trade businesses to success. Paul and the Vocational committee will consider this as a potential program.

Looking forward to Wuthering heights this Friday and also the interval supper, this is always a highlight.

Remember as always be a “gift to the world”

President David welcomed our guests and also David S and Rob back from their trips. He also welcomed Kimberley Rice from St John of God Hospital as our Guest speaker.

Then a bit of a downer - he reported Terri's resignation. However she wants to remain in contact with Rotary and so may become a "Friend of Rotary".

There's a Board meeting on Monday at Barb Sheehan's House - normal time but not normal place !!!

In announcements :
  • Colin reminded us of "Wuthering Heights" next Friday - so there's no normal meeting on Thursday. The next meeting on Thursday 29th will be a "Melbourne Cup" night so be prepared to bring yourself and partner dressed for the occasion - but don't forget to let Ross know how many guests you're bringing.
  • Ian asked about volunteers for the Ice Fight roster at the Geelong Cup - 3.00 to 4.30
  • Di suggested looking up the story of Wuthering Heights at www.wuthering_heights.co.uk so as to refresh your memory of the story before going to the performance. You'll get more out of the performance if you do !!!
  • Stephen had a couple of points - firstly you'll be getting an email about membership - please participate. Secondly, planning for next year's Starseach has commenced - some committee members have retired so if you want to get on to a successful committee - here's your chance !!
  • Don - entreated us to look at the back page of last Saturday's "Insight" section of The Age.
Then Barry Stokes introduced Kimberley to talk to us about Bowel Cancer. She works full time as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the theatre at St John of God Hospital (Geelong ) specialising in the area of general, colorectal & laparoscopic surgery for the past 10 year. Her qualifications are impressive - a Bachelor of Nursing ( Preregistration ) Bachelor of Applied Science( Psychology), Graduate Diploma of Nursing ( Perioperative ), and Master of Nursing  .
She has assisted  with the Bowelscan kit testing this year, and hopes that by sharing her experiences can make a difference preventing bowel cancer from developing through continual awareness and education.
Kimberley's presentation made us aware of bowel cancer through the surgeons camera along with a demonstration of  equipment. A very comprehensive and professional presentation. Thanks Kimberley.

Barry commented to me that he is sure all present became more aware of the necessity to have a bowel scan test. Bowelscan  month is May 2016. The Bowelscan  A.G.M.will be held in two weeks after which details of the kits type, cost and  testing will be confirmed for 2016.

As a matter of interest, Postcode 3216 for 2015 had 17 positive tests which hopefully led to early detection and where necessary successful treatment.

POLIO THIS WEEK

Polio this week as of 14 October 2015

  • In Lao People's Democratic Republic a circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) outbreak has been confirmed, with one case, an eight year old boy who had onset of paralysis on 7 September. Outbreaks of cVDPVs can arise in areas of low population immunity, emphasizing the importance of strong vaccination coverage.
  • Thirty five million children were reached with polio vaccines during the September campaigns in Pakistan. Nearly 3 million children who were previously missed were vaccinated during the catch up days following this campaign. ‘Continuous community-protected vaccination’ (community based vaccinators who carry out immunization activities on an ongoing basis) and health camps are helping to reach children in the most difficult to reach areas.
  • Last week, the Independent Monitoring Board met in London to assess progress towards polio eradication and to make recommendations for the coming months. The report is expected to be published in the next few weeks.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES

In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on. – Robert Frost, 1874-1963, American Poet

A successful individual typically sets his next goal somewhat but not too much above his last achievement. In this way he steadily raises his level of aspiration. – Kurt Lewin, 1890-1947, German-born Psychologist

Defeat doesn't finish a man--quit does. A man is not finished when he's defeated. He's finished when he quits. – Richard M. Nixon, 1913-1994, 37th President of the United States

Humour ?

Wayne, a friend of mine, owns an auto-repair business. One day a woman called to inquire when he could work on her car. "I'm not busy now," he replied. "bring it right in."
A short time later, the woman pulled into the service bay, stopping her small car perfectly over the wide, deep grease pit.
"Wow!" Remarked Wayne. "That's great driving. Your wheels only have a couple of inches to spare on each side of the pit."
She looked blankly at him and asked, "What pit?"

A sixteen-year-old came home with a Porsche and his parents began to yell and scream, "Where did you get that car?"
He calmly told them, "I bought it today."
"With what money!?" demanded his parents. "We know what a Porsche costs."
"Well," said the boy, "this one cost me fifteen dollars."
The parents began to yell even louder. "Who would sell a car like that for fifteen dollars!?" they asked.
"It was the lady up the street," said the boy. "Don't know her name -- they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy a Porsche for fifteen dollars."
"Oh my goodness!" moaned the mother, "she must be a child abuser. Who knows what she will do next? John, you go right up there and see what's going on."
So the boy's father walked up the street to the house where the lady lived and found her out in the yard calmly planting flowers. He introduced himself as the father of the boy to whom she had sold a Porsche to for fifteen dollars and demanded to know why she did it.
"Well," she said, "this morning I got a phone call from my husband. I thought he was on a business trip, but I learned from a friend he has run off to Hawaii with his secretary. Then apparently she stole all his money and stranded him there!
Well he called me, without a dollar to his name, and asked me to sell his new Porsche and send him the money. So that's exactly what I did."

A Hotel guest calls the front desk and the clerk answers, "May I help you?"
The man says, "Yes, I'm in room 858. You need to send someone to my room immediately. I'm having an argument with my wife and she says she's going to jump out the window."
The desk clerk says, "I'm sorry sir, but that's a personal matter."
The man replies, "Listen you idiot. The window won't open... and that's a maintenance matter."
