Last Thursday Terri Bosna introduced 3 scholarship winners from GTEC to the club.  They were the 2014 winner, Ellish Long who has now been accepted into Law at RMIT, and the two winners for 2015, Dean Fedyk who is studying Information Technology, and Isobel Hamilton who is completing her HSC.

We continue to provide scholarship support to selected students as advised by GTEC staff.

Paul then delivered a presentation entitled ‘Giving or Receiving’ which outlined the criteria for selecting a charity to donate to.  He explained the attractiveness of donating to The Rotary Foundation due to its low administration cost, the immense reach of its projects and the fact that donations made to The Rotary Foundation are returned to our district as Grant Funds 3 years following the donation.
Paul will make his presentation available via a newsletter link.

I am delighted that our club had a large member contingent present at the District Conference in Maryborough.  I look forward to hearing about the highlights of the Conference.

Next week we are at the Davidson Restaurant at the Gordon TAFE at the usual time where our first ‘Chef for a Month’ meal will be enjoyed by our club and the student’s parents. Could club members please mix with the parents for the meal as this is a good opportunity to discuss what Rotary does with a view to attracting them as members of our club.

Regards,
Ian C

Run out of time for an editorial this week.

Fantastic time at the Conference - stayed on for the winery tour and the "Post Mortem" dinner on Sunday then drove home on Monday to get back to the office in a flurry of activity which lasted until tea time tonight.

Then I got "sucked in" to the excitement of the South Africa/New Zealand cricket match and here we are.

I'll have more to say about the Conference and the fabulous speakers in subsequent newsletters - but I'll let you into a secret. The speakers on Saturday morning (Shane Yates and Patricia Cameron-Hill) are the ones who publish the "Friday Funnies" which is where I get most of the jokes for my "Humour ?" section from. So you can guess what a fun session that was !!!

As a result of our successful visit to Karingal (late February), the Vocational committee felt it w

as appropriate to reinstate the “Pride of Workmanship Award” for Karingal.

The award consists of a small plaque with a presentation amongst peers and supervisors with a nominal cash award.
The award is chosen by the peer group empathising the values of excellence and team work.
It is planned the presentation will continue on a quarterly basis.

The winner of the latest award is Kristian Crawford, who was exceptionally pleased and humbled with the award. I was able to attend the presentation on the 20th of March and it was terrific to see, and experience the welcoming and friendship displayed by the whole organisation.

At the Conference in Maryborough last weekend we had a very inspiring presentation on Sustainability from
Ian McBurney, an engineer specializing in the environment, who comes from Bendigo.
Ian made the subject very easy to follow and it was evident that many delegates were very impressed, hopefully taking the message back to their Clubs.
I urge members to  see what Ian is doing,  by looking at his website-

Polio this week as of 18 March 2015

  • As per risk assessment criteria set by the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee on the international spread of wild poliovirus, Syria and Ethiopia have now been re-classified as countries ‘no longer infected by wild poliovirus, but which remain vulnerable to international spread’, following no detection of wild poliovirus in more than 12 months. More

  • In Pakistan, efforts are continuing to tighten up strategies and ensure implementation of the ‘low season’ emergency operations plan. Strong coordination of activities by Emergency Operations Centres (EOCs) at federal and provincial level is helping to evaluate implementation and enable corrective measures as necessary. See ‘Pakistan’ section below for more.

Please find the latest Volunteer Spreadsheets attached, both the detailed one for your benefit and the less detailed one for public distribution.

I have also modified the Volunteer calculator table so that you can track how your club is performing against target.

Please remember that this is event is a collaborative effort by the combined Geelong Clubs in a District project that you all committed to. We are pioneering new ground embarking on a project of this magnitude within our District and it is really our opportunity to show the Rotary world just what can be achieved when clubs join forces.
We are now less than 5 weeks from the event and the organising committee is getting down to the serious end of business. The greatest priorities for us all are:-
a.       Promoting the event to attract as many entrants  as possible for ultimately this is what generates the dollars for Rotary.
1            We have DL cards and A3 posters available for distribution (please contact Tony Stewart or John Paton for these) which need to be placed anywhere cyclists hang out in Shops, coffee shops, bike shops etc. If your members know of any suitable locations please help with this.
II.            Ensure that the event is promoted in your Club Bulletins, especially the website and Facebook page (see details below)
III.            Encourage Facebook users in your Clubs to please 'like' the event page and “share” it amongst their own friends
b.      Make sure that your club is contributing your fair share of volunteers to the event. There are still lots of tasks available across all times and locations. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any further details.

Your Club will be visited by one of the event committee soon to update your members about the event so if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask them.

Yours in Rotary
Greg Plumridge

I believe that true identity is found in creative activity springing from within. It is found when one loses oneself. - Anne Morrow Lindbergh, 1906-2001

A wife commented, "When we were first married, you took the small piece of steak and gave me the larger. You don't love me any more...."
"Nonsense, darling," replied the husband, "you cook better now."

A man walks into a dentist's surgery and says, "Excuse me, can you help me. I think I'm a moth."
"You don't need a dentist. You need a psychiatrist."
"Yes, I know."
"So, why did you come in here?"
"The light was on."

"The thrill is gone from my marriage," one buddy told another.
"Why not add some intrigue to your life and have an affair?"
"But what if my wife finds out?"
"Heck, this is a new age we live in. Go ahead and tell her about it!"
So the guy went home and said, "Dear, I think an affair will bring us closer together."
"Forget it," said his wife. "I've tried that so many times and it never worked."
