Thanks all for the fabulous welcome to the Presidential role of Highton Rotary over the coming 12 months; I look forward to the challenges and success we will have on the way but most of all I look forward to working with the people in the club.

Last Thursday's Meeting was another great week with essentially 2 great speakers Ashish Motiani who spoke enthusiastically about RYLA and its effect on him, the contacts he has made and bond this group achieved. It's fabulous the influence that Linda Kelly (through Anne Cox's  youth committee) has had on these young lives. Highton Rotary has played a part in this success.

We then had the joy to hear of the amazing advance in Robotics from Dr Mick Fielding and I learnt a new words "haptic sense" (for robots) - the ability to establish a sense of feel through robotics, fabulous stuff. The buzz after the meeting showed the enthusiasm towards the talk. I think even Ian had a chance to relax with the working model. Thanks to Ros and Brenton for the fabulous programming effort.

It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing of Jim Mulchany's brother on the same night. Whilst not unexpected it doesn't take away any of the grief. Our thoughts are with Jim and family during this difficult time. Jim maintained his impeccable standard of running Circus Quirkus throughout this period, this is of great credit to Jim.

But a little about the Rotary theme this year "Be a gift to the world"

RI President K.R. Ravindran chose Be a Gift to the World as his theme for 2015-16. Ravindran urges Rotary members to give the gifts of time, talent, and knowledge to improve lives in communities across the globe. "Through Rotary, we can take these gifts and make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world."

This is a lovely simple message and I think our club exemplifies this message - so if we keep our message and action strong we will make a difference

Looking forward to a fabulous rotary year

that was the week that was

What a start to the New Rotary Year. A fascinating speaker and a chance to play with some toys !! Jusging by the number of people who were gathered around the robots after the meeting, this topic obviously held a lot of interest for a lot of people. All that plus a great report from Ashish - our RYLA attendee.
Here are some photos and also some from the changeover meeting - 'cos you didn't get them last week !

From Nepal - rc bhakatpur

The Rotary Club of Bhaktapur would like to thank Highton Rotary for your very generous support for our Shelter Project in which we are endeavouring to provide shelters for the families made homeless when our once beautiful U.N. World Heritage City of Bhaktapur was devastated by the recent earthquake.
With more than half of the houses collapsed, thousands of our families homeless and now with the onset of the monsoon we are being overwhelmed with pleas for shelters.
The Rotary Club of Highton was the first Rotary Club to come to our assistance and we would like to thank everyone at the Club for your wonderful generosity.

Polio this week as of 1 July 2015

In June, the wild poliovirus outbreaks in Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia and Kenya were assessed to be over by independent teams, having successfully interrupted transmission of the virus. While this is a sign that supplementary immunization activities and acute flaccid paralysis have been strengthened since all of the outbreaks began in 2013, it is essential for these gains to be maintained and built upon in order to protect children within these countries from the return of the virus.

Five cases of circulating vaccine derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) have been reported in Madagascar, with dates of onset of paralysis in April and May 2015. These cases are genetically linked to that from September 2014, indicating prolonged and widespread circulation of the virus. The emergency outbreak response is now being intensified to build immunity against the virus in the country, as 25 % of children across Madagascar remain un- or under- immunized.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES

Character is higher than intellect. A great soul will be strong to live as well to think.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.

Alexander Graham Bell

It is funny about life: if you refuse to accept anything but the very best you will very often get it.

W. Somerset Maugham

HUMOUR ?

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?
Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?
Why does a round pizza come in a square box?
What disease did cured ham actually have?
How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?
Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up like every two hours?
Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?
Why do doctors leave the room while you change?  They're going to see you naked anyway...
Why is 'bra' singular and 'panties' plural?
If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him?

While visiting Annapolis, a lady tourist noticed several students on their hands and knees assessing the courtyard with pencils and clipboards in hand.
"What are they doing?" she asked the tour guide.
"Each year," he replied with a grin, "the upperclassmen ask the freshmen how many bricks it took to finish paving this courtyard."
When they were out of earshot of the freshmen, the curious lady asked the guide: "So, what's the answer?"
The guide replied: "One."

One day I accidentally overturned my golf buggy.
Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out, Are you okay, what's your name?"
"Its Jack , and I'm Okay thanks," I replied.
"Jack , forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while, and I'll help you get the cart up later."
"That's mighty nice of you," I answered, but I don't think my wife would like it."
"Oh, come on," Elizabeth insisted.
She was very pretty, very sexy and persuasive... I was weak.
"Well okay," I finally agreed, and added, "but my wife won't like it."
After a restorative brandy, and some creative putting lessons, I thanked my host. "I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset."
"Don't be silly! Elizabeth said with a smile, She won't know anything. By the way, where is she?"
"Under the cart!"
