from president david

It is with some disappointment that this week that we hear of the resignation from the club of Malcolm John. This is of course disappointing from a club perspective but we wish Malcolm and family nothing but the very best for his future endeavours from all at Rotary.  Malcolm in his resignation made note of how good the club is and he simply needed to “pull back” from some activities. It also demonstrates our need for continued membership focus.

We intend to acknowledge Malcolm and Alison’s contribution to the club in the near future and look forward to maintaining some level of contact. Please stay tuned for further notification.

David Sinclair gave us his clear insight into financial position of the club, and now is the time for us to consider the clubs next course of action, specifically with reduction or otherwise of our reserves. I would like this to be a point of discussion within our committees as we need to set our budgets for the coming year. David also made the point regarding our income streams, we need to be aware of these streams, their strengths, weaknesses and potential alternatives as we continue our many and varied programme(s) into the future.

We heard through this week of the passing of Bert Fagg, the club will pass on condolences to Belmont RC.

Again we had another great speaker in Linda Ennis of Leisurelink, she demonstrated the importance of exercise for both our physical and mental health. It is always is pleasing to see the connection between ourselves and these important community health activities. Graham showed us his heart connection to the community which is a connection of interest.

Ray Rounds had his first go at being the MC for the evening (are we trying to get away from using the designation "Sergeant-At-Arms ?) and a jolly good job he did too.

President David welcomed our guest speaker Linda Ennis and also Pat Blood. As mentioned in his report, we were informed that Malcolm John has decided to call it a day and resigned from the club.
Legacy have requested that we help them with their collection between the 2nd - 5th September. Volunteers please see David or Darcy.
The arrangements regarding Property are under review but in the meantime would those rostered to do the welcome please also take responsibility for putting out and putting away the gong, pigs and banners.

Ross reported that Ian Campbell has the 'flu, Jim's brother has passed away so we need to keep him and his family in our thoughts, and Rod has had a short stay in Hospital but is home again now.
Anne let us know that our candidate for the NYSF is through to the next round - the next interview is with the District Committee.
Paul said that the Blue Book and Annual Report are now available for viewing or download on our web page and will be updated regularly.
David gave us a good account (pun intended) of our financial situation.
Jacko asked for volunteers to help at Barb Cox's place - by the time this is published it'll all be over unless rain stopped play !!

Then Linda Ennis, our guest speaker, told us about the "Live Well" programme available at Leisurelink for the over 55's. Of course no-one in our club is over 55, so what she was saying was or academic interest only !!! Similarly, when she said that the ideal maximum waist measurement for men was 900mm and women 800mm - that couldn't possibly apply to any of us. Furthermore exercise is proven to be good for osteoarthritis, is a good preparation for any operation and even better for recovering from operations. Again I can't think why she would think that applied to us. The bit that did interest me was that she said that our metabolism keeps burning off kilojoules up to 5 hours after exercise and that the endorphins produced give us a "feel good" experience. I figure that we can all do with that.

The photo below shows how persuasive she is at being able to get us all out of our chairs and doing a bit of stretching.

POLIO THIS WEEK

Polio this week as of 1 July 2015

In June, the wild poliovirus outbreaks in Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia and Kenya were assessed to be over by independent teams, having successfully interrupted transmission of the virus. While this is a sign that supplementary immunization activities and acute flaccid paralysis have been strengthened since all of the outbreaks began in 2013, it is essential for these gains to be maintained and built upon in order to protect children within these countries from the return of the virus.
  • Five cases of circulating vaccine derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) have been reported in Madagascar, with dates of onset of paralysis in April and May 2015. These cases are genetically linked to that from September 2014, indicating prolonged and widespread circulation of the virus. The emergency outbreak response is now being intensified to build immunity against the virus in the country, as 25 % of children across Madagascar remain un- or under- immunized.

In the latest Regional Information Bulletin from Parramatta, (June 2015) the following is noted :

At the 2013 Council on Legislation, Article 9, Section 3 (b) of the Standard Rotary Club Constitution was amended to state the following: “Excused Absences: A member’s absence shall be excused if (b) the aggregate of the member’s years of age and years of membership in one or more clubs is 85 years or more and the member has notified the club secretary in writing of the member’s desire to be excused from attendance and the board has approved.”

Since this is news from the 2013 C o L I can't quite understand why it's only just appearing - but here it is anyway.

AN idea from the vocational committee

In the earlier years of Rotary, there was a good reason for emphasising not only fellowship and service but also the vocation of its members.
Whilst classifications and such rules have justifiably been modified over the years in order to encourage membership, vocational links are important and in this club could be stronger.
We've been trying to think about how to do that.
The good work David has done in the past with the Gordon, You-Turn and Karingal is being continued and Graham Blood is organising a trip to St John of God which will be great.
However our club has a significant percentage of retired members who may not have kept in touch with their younger professional or vocational associates. Perhaps this is an opportunity to re-establish those links and to have a bit of fun by inviting a young person of the same vocation as one of our members to our dinner meeting. The visitor and the member would participate in a joint "then and now" presentation of no more than 10 minutes. The differences will obviously include technological advances, but could also relate to work methods, materials and any other significant changes. I hope we can keep this light-hearted rather than a "whinge" session !! Younger visitors to our meetings may even result in new members.
What do you think ? If you have any ideas about how this may work please let me know. In the meantime we will firm up our ideas and keep you informed of developments.
Paul

Humour ?

The Satnav - by Pam Ayres

I have a little Satnav,
It sits there in my car
A Satnav is a driver's friend,
it tells you where you are.
I have a little Satnav,
I've had it all my life
It's better than the normal ones,
My Satnav is my wife.
It gives me full instructions,
Especially how to drive
"It's sixty miles an hour", it says,
"You're doing sixty five".
It tells me when to stop and start,
And when to use the brake
And tells me that it's never ever,
Safe to overtake.
It tells me when a light is red,
And when it goes to green
It seems to know instinctively,
Just when to intervene.
It lists the vehicles just in front,
And all those to the rear
And taking this into account,
It specifies my gear.
I'm sure no other driver,
Has so helpful a device
For when we leave and lock the car,
It still gives its advice.
It fills me up with counselling,
Each journey's pretty fraught
So why don't I exchange it,
And get a quieter sort?
Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,
Makes sure I'm properly fed
It washes all my shirts and things,
And keeps me warm in bed!
Despite all these advantages,
And my tendency to scoff,
I only wish that now and then,
I could turn the bugger off.
